German companies present projects at Cambodia Circular Economy Forum

German Know-how and Technology to boost sustainable Waste Management in Cambodia

From September 9th to 11th, the Cambodia Circular Economy Forum was held in Phnom Penh. Organized by GIZ Cambodia, the event brought together policymakers, private sector representatives, local community leaders, development partners, and experts to discuss Cambodia’s path forward towards a circular economy. Day 2 of the forum started with exploring business perspecitves on waste management, featuring a series of presentations from both German and Cambodian companies. The three German companies everwave GmbH, ECOLOGICON GmbH and atmosfair gGmbH shared insights into their planned and ongoing projects in the country, ranging from waste cleanups in rivers and battery takeback schemes to biomass projects for green energy.

As Cambodia advances its efforts towards a circular economy, German companies can play an important role by providing expertise and technology – provided legislation catches up with international standards to ensure viable business cases.

everwave organizes long-term cleanup projects in rivers and lakes of South-East-Asia – including Cambodia – with garbage boats to prevent ocean littering. Artificial intelligence assists in the cleanup missions to detect and analyze waste, with the collected material being sorted into recyclables and non-recyclables to be co-processed or recycled (speaker: Maarten Lieben).

With the support of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, ECOLOGICON is currently conducting a feasibility study in Cambodia to develop solutions and approaches for take-back of portable batteries and local recycling, as well as provide country-specific plans and information to the Royal Government (speaker: André Rückert).

atmosfair is currently looking for local partners in Cambodia who can join them in developing and operating sustainable long-term projects with high emission reduction potential. Biomass projects for renewable energy generation are one example, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a green energy transition in the global south (speaker: Martin Herma).
