Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers fellowships for postdoctoral researchers

Germany calls international scholars and scientists for conducting research at the heart of Europe. The Humboldt Research Fellowship allows postdoctoral researchers to carry out long-term projects (6-24 months) at German universities. Applicants can choose their own topic of research and their academic host. International researchers with above average qualifications, at the beginning of their academic career and only completed the doctorate in the last four years can apply. In addition, potential candidates who have been in Germany for more than six months at the time of application are excluded from this fellowship program.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation – named after the famous Prussian geographer, naturalist, explorer, and influential proponent of Romantic philosophy and science – is dedicated to promote academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany. Scientists and scholars of all nationalities and disciplines may apply online at any time (unfortunately, currently the selection process will take up to ten months before applicants receive a decision). The Humboldt Foundation grants approximately 500 fellowships for postdoctoral researchers and experienced researchers annually. According to its self-perception, only one thing counts: excellent performance as a scientist to become a member of the “Humboldt Family”. There are no quotas, neither for individual countries, nor for particular academic disciplines.

The fellowship is worth € 2,650 per month, approximately $ 2,900. This includes a mobility lump sum and a contribution towards health and liability insurance. This sum can even be considerably increased by additional family allowances, for a language fellowship or indirectly as a subsidy to cover research costs of the German host. The program is financed by Germany’s Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
