In September 2018, the German Business Group (ADW) and EuroCham Cambodia signed a memorandum of understanding with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to establish a Business & Cooperation Desk in Cambodia. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), it is part of the Global Business Network (GBN) Programme and provides information, advice and guidance to support local, German and other European businesses and institutions which engage in development cooperation. Further tasks are to facilitate access to development cooperation programmes, organise a dialogue between development cooperation and the German private sector, and to identify business opportunities.
Represented by Dr. Bianca Untied, GBN-coordinator in Cambodia, the Business & Cooperation Desk had 137 business contacts in its first year. The enquiries focused mainly on
- support and financing opportunities offered by the German government to the private sector
- market and sector-related information on Cambodia
- access to bilateral, regional and global GIZ programmes
Furthermore, the desk organized and co-organized elven events in Cambodia, tailored to relevant sectors such as renewable energies, recycling technologies, and policy dialogue. At chambers of commerce and industry as well as business associations in Germany, the desk conducted five briefing events on business and project opportunities in Cambodia.
Since its inauguration in Cambodia, the desk has been developing ten project concepts, covering a wide spectrum including cashew and potato production, road safety, combatting illegal fishing, quality infrastructure, recycling technologies and affordable prostheses. In addition, the GBN Programme facilitated six publications on market information and business opportunities in Cambodia that have been published by ADW as well.
Tassilo Brinzer, President of ADW in Cambodia and Vice Chairman of EuroCham Cambodia, expressed his satisfaction with the desk’s achievements so far. “We are very glad that we can cooperate with the GBN Programme in Cambodia. The increased focus on working with the private sector in helping to develop sustainable economic sectors in key growth areas fits perfectly with our goals as an association.”
Similarly, Blaise Kilian, Director of EuroCham, expressed his gratitude towards GIZ and ADW for the great cooperation. “So far, it has been a very fruitful and meaningful partnership. For the first time, development cooperation institutions and private business organizations have worked so closely together – for mutual benefit.”
Dr. Günter Riethmacher, GIZ Office Cambodia Country Director, stated: “Private sector cooperation has always been an integral part of German development cooperation in Cambodia, because the Sustainable Development Goals can only be achieved once the private sector is actively involved. Therefore, it is of our core interest to establish close links with the private sector even further.”
